Cynical Observation from the Office

"Can-do attitude" is a phrase only used by people who don't have to "do," i.e., management. It seems to only be used in situations when the "do" is about to get bigger, such as a task becoming more complicated purely for reasons of reporting and documentation (a purely hypothetical example, wink wink).

The next project

This is the next target of our nesting-on-steroids campaign. It will be a different project than remodeling the bathroom, since we don't have another kitchen. We won't be able to drag the project out over a year.

There are lots of cute shows on HGTV about remodeling, and Lowe's or Home Depot are more than happy to give you a bunch of catalogs full of expensive shit. I wish some of it pertained to our kitchen. The USA's home improvement marketing machine doesn't have the dinky galley kitchen on its radar. I don't pretend to be surprised, just annoyed. I took the two pictures above while standing in the same spot. This is a small kitchen. It's nice and efficient for one cook, but it bears no resemblance to the vast rooms full of custom cabinetry that fill magazines and catalogs. I'd like to make some aspects of it more space-efficient; perhaps IKEA will have some options. Our kitchen is huge by European standards.

Anyway, we're thinking Corian or some solid counter top material, a big, deep, single bowl sink that takes less counter space than the present shallow two-bowler, apothecary glass cupboard doors, and perhaps a new window. We're replacing the Reagan-Era dishwasher anyway.

Our house is a modest, comfortable ranch. Tearing out walls and doing a dream kitchen would cost more money than we'd ever get back from a buyer, so we're going to be moderate. It will be a harder project to live with than the bathroom, though.

Up in Michigan 2

Our late maternal grandmother had an incredible collection of salt & pepper shakers. Grandpa built the display cabinet.

I found this sign at a store in Frankenmuth. It's virtually identical to one that our late paternal grandparents had in their front porch area (my sister has that one in her guest room now). I hung it on our porch in Raleigh.

This is Delphi. However, it is Steering Gear to us. It was Saginaw Division of General Motors. Our dad worked there for 34 years. I left the picture file full-size for detail.

This 1967 ranch is the house is the first house I ever lived in. It still has the same sycamore tree out front. Our family lived here for 11 years before moving to the house where our mother still lives today.

But enough about the past. Here is my eldest nephew, standard-bearer of our family's next generation, lighting fireworks in the sandbox:

And here is my eldest niece bouncing on the trampoline:

2010 Recap

The past year has been so memorable (in both good and bad ways) that it deserves a recap.  I feel I should keep this in mind because someday when I look back, 2010 will be the year with the most challenges for me and for our family.
We started the year with me jobless (by choice, and hoping for a good year ahead with the bazaar business.  At some point I know I will have to look for a job back at corporate because it was hard for us to save with me just into business.  All of hubby's salary was going to daily expenses.  I had a bazaar coming up but that didn't turn out well.  In the end it was a frantic search for THE next job. Unfortunately the next 2 job offers that came were not to my liking, not even close to what I had with the Selecta job.  And hubby patiently told me to hold off until I find what is worth me.
So careerwise, things started getting better when I got this interview with a food manufacturing company whose office is just outside our village. It was a pleasant surprise that it was so near, and the position they were offering was really something I liked.  It took a good month and a half before I got the offer and it was really a dream come true.  A good career position, directly under the General Manager's supervision, with great benefits and competitive salary.  I had under me 5 staff to supervise, and the real plus part is that the office is just outside our village.  It is truly a dream.  Of course, dreams don't last forever and now that I have it, its no bed of roses, but I'm learning and its a matter of time before I can excel in what I do, just as I always do.
Homewise.... we started the year without a helper/yaya after I fired the previous one (for abuse of authority --- aka shouting and harassing my little girl). I was a full time homemaker for a total of 3 months.  No regrets though, being able to take care of my girl, no matter how difficult, is really something to be proud of, in a modern world like ours, not all careerwomen get the opportunity to stay home full time to take care of their kids and watch them grow up.  In February we finally had a new helper/yaya, and she is heaven-sent!  I can't begin to say how she has become family to us and I do hope she stays with us for a long time.
And then I thought we were going to have someone new in the family.  Found out I was pregnant sometime in October, but that ended soon with a blighted ovum.  It was a sad and trying time, having had an easy pregnancy with Jessica, this came as a surprise.  But then I had to be strong and we just decided to try again. After the miscarriage we hoped we could have it easy and and fortunately it paid off.  I haven't gone to the OB yet but the last 2 home pregnancy tests came positive so I am hoping this one will take off, and smoothly too.
Since June, things have started to get better for us, a new job, great career ahead, financial stability.  Finally we have enough to live a more comfortable life.  Hopefully in 2011 we will have an additional member of the family too.
So I hope things will go well for you too.  :-)

Good Locovorous Weekend

I did a big shopping run at the farmers' market on Saturday. I decided to turn some of the local eggs into pasta:
The rolling of the sheets:
The cutting of the tagliatelle (they're actually more easily handled when I cut them by hand):

And the kitty cat keeps everything under surveillance:

The tagliatelle was adorned with a sausage ragu (the sausage also came from the farmers' market) and roasted asparagus and walnuts. Walnuts are good on pasta! Why didn't I stumble on that before? We didn't starve.

Thanksgiving

(listening to Franck's Chorale #3 in A Minor)
I have much to be thankful for. Generally speaking, I have more than I deserve in life. In particular, I'm thinking of this weekend (all four days of it). I left Sauron's Corporate Pit of Toil on Wednesday afternoon, and I bent all my thought and will toward Thanksgiving dinner. My back had been steadily improving since last week's lumbar sprain, so I was able to do the cooking (I work with a roomful of pharmacists. I gleaned enough information to decide to interrupt my muscle relaxer for a day, allowing me to drink Beaujolais while safely using a knife).

Thanksgiving is a day of cooking and gluttony; it is therefore my favorite holiday. I picked up a few things at the mobbed grocery store on the way home. I was greeted by my wife and her parents, who stayed with us for the holiday. I love having them around. Lindz and her Mom had already made two fine pies: one pumpkin and one cranberry-pear.

(Karg-Elert's "Marche Triomphale: Nun Danket alle Gott")

I got up early on Thanksgiving morning. Lindsey's father and I procured a few more forgotten items at the store, and I started poring over timelines and steps in The New Best Recipe. I was pleased to have been allowed to cook everything (I like being in control of my kitchen), but much work stood between me and six sated diners (Lindz's aunt and a guest were to join us). I had prepared the cranberry-onion confit, a jamlike, flavorful delight, two days earlier. I had already dried a mountain of bread cubes for the stuffing. I began sipping a Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale at 11 am. I started chopping onions, carrots, celery, apples and bacon. This was the menu:

Roast Turkey (a 13.5 pound Kosher bird)
Bread Stuffing with Granny Smith Apples, Sage and Bacon
Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Gravy (made from scratch with vegetables, roux and turkey drippings)
Cranberry-Onion Confit
Green Bean Casserole (brought by Lindz's aunt)
Several bottles of Georges DuBoeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2005
Pumpkin Pie and Cranberry-Pear Pie with Frangelico-spiked Whipped Cream

I spent a total of five blissful hours in the kitchen. Lindz's folks tidied up the house, went for a stroll, played Scrabble and offered me help several hundred times. They know I love to cook, but they were convinced that I was working too hard. Chopping and sweating four pounds of onions is profoundly relaxing to a weirdo like me. I had a lovely time. I accepted the gracious offers of help when it came time to turn the sizzling bird over. Other than that, I monopolized the kitchen entirely. I even made some pita chips for an appetizer while all this was going on. My back felt pretty good, even though I knew I would pay for it later. The beer and wine helped things, most assuredly.

The turkey was resting on a carving board on top of the clothes dryer (every horizontal surface in the kitchen's vicinity was occupied by some part of the preparations), and I was bringing everything else together: mashing the potatoes, adjusting the thickness of the gravy and putting the bread, stuffing and green bean casserole into the vacated oven. The house was full of conversation and laughter. I put all the food on the kitchen counters, and the guests filed in to fill their plates. We sat down, Lindsey said a blessing, and we ate. All was right with the world. The food turned out to my satisfaction, and everyone enjoyed themselves. We ate heartily and spent a good while chatting over after-dinner drinks and pie, bobbing gauzily on a sea of Frangelico and tryptophan.

My guests admonished me to stay seated while they cleaned up. It's fairly difficult to fit five people into my little kitchen, but they did it. Fortunately, I was stuffed and slightly drunk, and that allowed me to relinquish control of my precious little realm over which I had held dominion all day. The most impressive feat was fitting the leftovers into the fridge. I chatted with my brother and my friend Charlotte on the phone while this was going on. They spent Thanksgiving together, sipping champagne and nibbling all sorts of good things. They had been the core of my Thanksgiving ritual for years in San Diego, and we had soared to dizzying heights of gluttony and epicurean gratification. We had always cooked lots of non-traditional things and gorged ourselves with whatever conglomeration of transplanted individuals we could assemble. In some ways, it was always the opposite of the traditional, family-oriented thing I did this year. In many ways, it was the same day of good food and good company that one would hope for. I miss the San Diego style Thanksgiving, but I certainly love the Raleigh version as well.

Lindz's aunt and her friend expressed their thanks and said their farewells. The rest of us stumbled off to bed. We spent the next day loafing around, not shopping with the rest of the world. My father-in-law wanted to take us out to dinner. It seemed, however, that all of us were enjoying the quiet of the house. After taking thought, I decided that we would light a fire in the fireplace, get a bunch of take-out Chinese food, and open the bottle of Mumm's Blanc de Noirs which I had purchased a few days earlier. It was perfect. A good sparkling wine goes with anything, but sitting around the table with good company and a variety of Chinese food is as good as it gets. We had some pie afterwards, played a game of Scrabble (I won!) and sipped Frangelico by the fire. Lovely.

So here we are, staring down the barrel of another Christmas. The in-laws have gone home. Lindz and I have enough leftovers to sustain us for weeks. The turkey carcass and a bunch of rice from the Chinese take-out have been reborn as a huge batch of soup. The weather is becoming bleaker. My gift shopping is not done yet. I should bake Christmas cookies. When did I start trying to impersonate a grownup?

Back to blogging post

Ok, so two months is again a long time for me to go back.  I even planned on a Project 365 but stopped right smack on January (1st or 2nd week). Duh.  Well, time for me to do some creative thinking since spending Saturdays here in the office without the management meeting can be really boring.

Well, anyway, lots of updates up ahead.  I guess I should make a long post in case I don't get to blog again in a month! I'll just number my updates so I get to see just where I am right now and hopefully the next time I read it I get to give better (and more up to date) updated.

1. On Jessica.  Jessica will be graduating Nursery on March 25. Yey! I always laughed and said I only had 16 years to go to have a daughter with a college degree. yey!  But anyhow, I heard from her teacher she'll be 2nd or 3rd place in her nursery class (of 8 students! LOL).  I really don't want to sound too proud of her, but I am happy that at the minimum effort, she has actually been a great student and eager for school.  To think I just wanted her to interact with other kids, and still she managed to get good grades.  I've seen a lot of improvements too.  She can identify letters, numbers, she can count, she can color well.  And my oh my, can she speak well.  She speaks like she's 7 years old.  Its so nice to be in a conversation with her because she really can speak like a normal adult.  I'm really happy how she turned out with one year at school.  I won't be enrolling her in the same school but with a bigger one, since now we can more or less afford a better school. But nevertheless I am happy with her experiences on her first preschool year.

2. On Baby No. 2. Well, she's a GIRL! I went for an ultrasound yesterday (hey, I've always said I had really short EQ, so I HAD TO KNOW).  We would have wanted a boy of course, so we can stop at 2 kids, since a 2nd girl brings about the pressure of a baby no. 2.  But I can't be all sad knowing we're gonna have another baby girl who I can dress up again, and who I know will be really cute and look like me. :-)  And I am happy, she's as trouble free as Jessica was, and so I know she will just be as smart and pretty.  Baby boy will have to  wait, if at all, at least another 3 years (still subject for discussion though).

3. On Household stuff.  Well, nothing much has changed.  The house is till the house, not much renovation.  One major change coming up though is that I am gearing up Jessica's nanny (and our all-around) for school.  I told her time and again that I was willing to pay for her education, so I made my research with the nearby college here in Cainta called ICCT.  The tuition is quite affordable at 5k per trisem for a bachelors degree, and I guess its money I am willing to let go to see that my yaya will have a good future someday.  I planned her to be in school for the afternoon sessions, that's 3-7pm.  So in the morning she can tend to Jessica first, who will go to school mornings.  In the afternoons normally its just sleeptime for them anyway.  She usually does housechores in the morning.  Well, when I called up the school regarding their entrance exams I learned that they require a 75% passing mark in the exam to qualify for a bachelor's degree, so that put pressure on me for yaya to pass. I don't want her to take a vocational course because a bachelors course could take her farther.  So I bought her reviewers and told her she can study first before taking the test.  Hopefully she will pass.  Its been 3 or 4 years since she graduated high school so she has a lot of catching up to do.  And so plans are already made to ask for the yaya no. 2 to come in 2 months earlier than my EDD.  Though it will be an added expense, its ok since it will take a load off my having to do household chores too, specifically cooking and going to the market.  Its a plus that this new yaya is a friend of my yaya now so I hopefully will have less worries of them not getting along.  I don't want to have to deal with that stress.  That said, I still will need to buy them a double deck bed and an additional closet space.  But its a plus that the new helper worked in our neighborhood before so she knows the stress come the rainy days (i.e. potential flooding).

4. On Career.  Work has been fairly easy and less stressful these days, probably because I already know my job now so I can deal with it easily, as I always do.  Oh, and we already got my company car, which we paid to upgrade from a Vios to a Ford Escape.  We wanted something bigger for the rainy days.  Before we wanted to get an Innova but we found it too expensive for being too bare.  So we got the Escape instead.  I also get 100L free gasoline with it so it helps take a load of fuel expenses.  Hubby prefers not to use the car on weekdays to Makati because its easier for him to commute.  So technically, 100L of gas can take us weekends out malling or to go around a bit, plus every once in while to go out of town.  Oh, and I already get to drive to the office by myself.  So in a few months time, I'm sure I can go out on my own already! :-p

hmmm... that's that for a while.  I have not blogged about the biz or or recent trip to Baguio. I hope I can do that soon enough,

till next time!

Herb & Cheese Filled Bread

I baked a braided loaf of bread. It has white and whole wheat flours with rosemary in the dough, and the center of each braid strand contains a vein of cheese, thyme and rosemary.

Gotta Learn to drive

I have to learn how to drive. and soon.  I know I'm missing a lot but I've always been pretty capable in commuting, so there is no real drive for me to learn to drive. I like the train better. or jeepneys. For a while when we didn't have someone else to take care of Jess, I've thought that its easier if I drove myself and we just had a car seat for her so she can sit in the back. The thing is, Jess was not a car seat baby. She likes to be with me at the back of the car while hubby drove. But with the inevitable trip of hubby looming ahead of us, I have to pressure myself much more now.  Don't worry, I will drive. I promise myself that.

On moving on and forward

Today marks my last day out of a 1 year hiatus from the corporate world. Hopefully it will be a breeze starting work again. It's a good thing though that I am really happy where I am going, it has all the elements for a start of a good career. Too early to tell, I know, but I always think that thinking positive helps to make a good start. Anyway, I'm happy with what's going on ahead of me.
The past year has been a roller coaster ride for us, I definitely learned a lot, lived a lot, and definitely feel that for what we lacked on the financial side the past year, the memories and the experience more than made up for it. I would not have exchanged it for the world.
First and foremost, it was the experience of having been a stay at home mom for a time, while I had busy days when I tried to handle a business, for the most part I was busy with Jessica and running the home. It was heaven being able to take care of a toddler, see to her needs, and generally see how she's growing up, good and bad sides included. At the end of 2009, I even let go of my yaya, and had to struggle being the full-time mom for around 3 months. And I definitely have no regrets over that, I think those 3 months together where we only had each other (hubby, me and Jess) was also a plus because I can definitely say I can take care of my daughter + all the chores on my own, and I can live without being dependent on someone else to do the chores. It was a much needed realization for me as well, that the yaya I had simply lacked the motivation and the concern she once had for my daughter, so it was time for her to move on. The new yaya I have now, I believe she's very much worth it and worth the wait of a couple of months. I'll be leaving the house every morning confident and assured that my daughter is in good hands.
Career-wise, I don't feel that the past year has been a letdown in terms of my career. I for one, believe that the last employment I had was inevitably going to be a dead end. I was happy I ended it at three months otherwise I would spend the next few months (or years if I tried, I guess) probably miserable and 20 years older.  I also don't regret that I left the previous one before that. After a couple of months things there didn't turn out well from what I hear, so it was still a good move. True, I spent a couple of months and several frustrations over my 5-plus months of job hunting, and two job offers after I was studying the possibility that I lost my marketability, despite the UP-education and the MBA.  Turned out it was a matter of getting the right offer at the right time.  Kudos to hubby for always reminding me that the right offer will come at the right time. And it surely did.
Over my relationship with hubby, the past year has been deeply enriching, for both of us.  I have always earned my keep, and I always got the things I wanted. I had a good career in the past and really good compensation for the past 4 years that we were together, we lived a comfortable enough life and can buy the things we want. He had a whole collection of remote-controlled cars and trucks and I was happy seeing him with that, he never heard a word from me about it, just as I never heard him say anything about me shopping, whether its for me or for Jess.  But when I let go of my job our world turned upside down, he had to give me almost all of his earnings, where previously he just gave half of it so he could save or buy the things he wanted). Now he had only his allowance. It was fine for a couple of months, I had the bazaars which also earned enough to keep the lifestyle at the very least, but came December we were already having a hard time.   The first half of 2010 had been a struggle making ends meet. Though we said goodbye to diapers already and saved a lot when Jessica changed over to more economical milk - Nido 1+ to 3+ will save you a lot, we still had to struggle because the salary was only just enough. No extras.  It was hard because when I had the time to spend money, there wasn't any to spend. :-p  But I never heard hubby complain, because I am sure he gave up a lot too. No night outs for him, he would take food to the office so he can minimize lunch outs. But it did bring out a  sense of responsibility for him to be the head of the house.  And I am proud of that. It made us closer to each other and we realize that if we had each other then we can make it, for better or for worse.
In parting, this closes a difficult but otherwise very enriching one year. And as I move on and hopefully to a better more wonderful workplace, I keep this experience up my sleeve and feel happy that I got through it. :-)

welcome me back

hey there!!!!! welcome me back! I'm so sorry for the really long months that I was not able to blog (ok fine, that was more than 3 months!). life has been busy and there have been so many changes all around. moved to a new job, new adjustments, jessica had her birthday, and now new stuff are keeping me quite busy.
so what's new? I have a whole LOT of catching up to do, as I'm sure you would know. pretty much everything in my life is turned upside down at the moment, but there's a lot of things that I am happy and grateful for. and that will never change. Making lots of plans, and hopefully these will materialize soon and reap its benefits for the hard work.
i'll write a more intense blog entry about the things going on in my life, just need to do some cleaning up of thoughts. :-) I do miss blogging. I wish I had more time and energy to do this and release my thoughts.

Triptych: Farmers' Bounty, a Lovely White Burgundy, and Shamelessness

We got some great produce at the Farmers' Market this weekend. I made stuffed eggplant last night, and here are some yellow squash that I seared in a skillet:
JJ Vincent Bourgogne Blanc is an elegant chardonnay with a bouquet of vanilla and almond. The palate is a refined balance of melon and fig, with appropriate alcohol. There is a pleasing lemony acidity in the finish.
This shit was in the Sunday paper. I should know better than to be surprised by anything, but we really liked this:

It's Twenty-Aught-Six, Y'all

(listening to "The Great Concerts," by the Dave Brubeck Quartet)
What can I say? If one judges 2005 by headlines, it was one of the most God-awful, disaster-filled years that this planet has seen in a while. The environment is screwed up, war abounds and human nature is still human nature. However, when I take the small, me-centered view (which is easier and more quickly gratifying anyway), it's been a pretty decent year. My grandmother's passing was bittersweet; she had wanted to go for some time, but my nostalgic side awoke and yearned for a multitude of bygone gramma stuff. Things would mean nothing if you could have them forever, though.
In contrast to the previous two years, Lindz and I have not moved, changed jobs or gotten married this past year. That prevents quite a bit of turmoil right there. We've been a bit bored and unsatisfied at some times, blissfully comfortable at others. It's simple and quiet here. Perhaps 2006 will be a more challenging, fulfilling year. I wish to prevent my brain and body from getting any softer, and getting into a better job would be lovely. The present job is tolerable most of the time, but I want more.

I'm not usually given to New Year's resolutions because I believe attempts at self-improvement should happen all the time. But what the hell:

1)I will continue to not rot my brain watching network television.
2)I will continue driving a small, paid-for, fuel-efficient car.
3)I will continue to make Lindz's lunch and morning tea every day.
4)I will finish reading at least one book from the pile beside my bed.
5)I will fix the leak in the master bathroom shower.
6)I will have a glass of wine (got that one done already).
7)I will brew beer.
8)I will destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force.

Messiah

(listening to organ music of Anthoni Van Noordt)
Golly, I feel pretty durned cultured. This evening, Lindz and I attended a performance of Handel's Messiah at Duke University Chapel. The wide-eyed rapture I sustained during its three hours of music is evidence that I inherited my late father's love of sacred music. I suppose my cd collection would also serve as evidence, but enduring those hard pews at Duke is the true test. Lindz's tailbone still hurts; bless her.
The performance was fabulous, the orchestra, choir and soloists were top-notch. The glorious place where they did it was what made it so magical for me. A gothic church with exquisite stained glass windows and a vaulted ceiling 73 feet above one's head will take one out of a humdrum state of mind. The Messiah is a great piece of work, both in quality and quantity. After three hours, you feel like you've gotten your dose of couth.
Dad would have burst with glee; he traveled to many cathedrals in Europe in his days, but a performance of this caliber in such a grand church would have really been something special for him. I enjoyed it enough for the both of us.

Another Triptych: Enjoying the new camera

Roast beef carnage:
After Christmas dinner:
The cooking wife (I cranked it up to ISO 1250 and turned off the overhead light. 1/100 sec exposure):
The camera is the Panasonic Lumix FZ8. It does a lot. We had been wanting an SLR, but Lindz had her eye on this one. It was quite a bit cheaper, and we really like it.

More Preparations for Bathroom Renovation Fun

It's called Orizzonti Dawn.
To put a perfectly clear, specific idea in your heads as to what it looks like, it's sort of, uh, beige.

I'll tell you this: the shit is heavy.

Big Surprise! Pictures of Food!

Lindz and I usually try to pretend to feign frowning on processed food in a box, but this stuff apparently contains crack cocaine. It's Monkey Bread. It comes frozen, you warm it up in the oven, and it's soft and oozing with cinnamon goo. It's so good, you might sell a family member just to have some.
A gooeyness of a different sort is this. Bryan and I nibbled on various things and drank some beers he brought back from Germany. The jar on the right contains home made liverwurst (hausgemacht leberwurst) from Ellen's brother-in-law in Germany. I thought we should have some cheese. I got this Chaource at Costco. It's almost liquid at room temperature. It was unctuous, buttery delight. The liverwurst was rich and luxurious, and it brought back memories of things my parents and grandparents enjoyed. It was marginalized in this shot only because the cheese was more photogenic.
For Thanksgiving, one of the dishes I prepared was a gratin of braised collards. I bought too many collards. What you see here is half of the collards I bought at the farmers' market (4,480 cubic inches of collards, or 73.4 liters, is what fits in this sink). I still haven't decided what to do with the rest. What I did with these was chop them up, braise them with smoked pork hocks and red pepper flakes, and then bake them into a gratin with bechamel sauce. It was well received; I also made it for Thanksgiving two years ago.
Here's an action shot of me chopping mirepoix for the gravy:
Lindz took all of these pictures except the cheese. The majority of the food photography on Thanksgiving was done by Bryan, who will be posting pictures very soon on his blog, I'm quite sure.

Fifty Gallons of Christmas in August

  Posted by Picasa
Yes indeedy, folks, that's a brand new water heater. The old unit was actually quite effective at heating water, but it just didn't know when to stop. Now I'm as big a fan of 50 gallons of continuously boiling water as the next guy, but it just didn't fit into my household's active, two-career, non-second-degree-burn lifestyle. It would have cost some real cashola to replace the thermostat on the old one, and it was an eight year old water heater.

The best part of all this is that I instructed the plumber to put a few hundred bouillon cubes inside of the new unit. We now have hot running broth at our house.
