Blauhaus Sushi Station

I asked my brother over for dinner this week, and what does that unpredictable scamp do? He brings over the makings for California Rolls. We made most of them inside-out, unlike the ones pictured here. They were so freegin' good. He brought good crabmeat from Trader Joe's, and that made the difference. I had no sesame seeds on hand, but we made good California Rolls. Bryan is far more practiced at this art, and his rolls were perfect. Mine didn't fall apart, but the filling was off center like Marty Feldman's eyes in Young Frankenstein. I got creative with one roll, which I named the Hello Kitty Sourpuss Roll. I included some preserved lemon (with a bit of the salt removed by soaking), and it was pretty good. We drank $10 Italian red wine with it all (Tenuta del Portale Starsa Basilicata), and it was perfect. Then, we watched a violent Japanese animated film called Ninja Scroll. Not English-dubbed. Marvelous.

A Little Dose of Ollie

In case anyone in Germany wants some.

That's NPR in the background talking about WWII Bulgarian tanks being found and put up for sale.

Oliver is quite mushy, and he was a shameless mooch last night when I made chicken for dinner.

Entertainment for a Rainy Afternoon

We like bing cherries. They just happen to go well with cabernet sauvignon.

After years of denouncing it as a unitasker, I purchased a cherry pitter. We like it. I haven't used it on olives yet, but we like this thing anyway. Preliminary tests indicate that this gadget will shoot a cherry pit six feet.

I also finally got us corn picks. A household isn't really established until your guests can hold a cob of corn in style.

Yep, we're happenin' people. We finally got a new dishwasher this afternoon; what better than a good cherry pittin' session to follow that?

starting anew

Ok, here I am again after a LOOOONG non-posting period. And I really do feel guilty about not posting, but then everytime I attempt to write my mind ends up blank so I simply forget about it.
Its been a while, holidays have passed, non-eventful if I may add because I am kinda financially incapacitated with no job the past few months. I'm actively searching now, and since I already have a new housekeeper after more than 2 months without, then I have a bit more time for myself while waiting for interview invitations and things like that.

So what else is new? Right now I am too busy hoarding scrapbook kits that I am finding for free courtesy of some n@wie/plurk referrals, and I am hoping to start and be active again at digiscrapping. I have a lot of pics I need to digiscrap anyway, its just a matter of putting it altogether. hayz. Maybe I should make a target, like 10 in a week. that'd be neat. :-)

Oh, and if any of you have any job leads in purchasing and supply chain (middle manager posts), please feel free to call buzz me, I'm more than happy to try it out!

My newfound friends

Last Friday, June 26, was my last day at Selecta. My officemates gave me a goodbye dinner at Eastwood (the first time I went back there since my Baby shower, which, if you can imagine, was in April 2007!). It was a really nice dinner, the first time I really went out since I quit Nestle, and I could really say I had fun chatting with them (despite the fact that most of them were fresh-grad-young, if you know what I mean. After dinner, they gave me a farewell gift, which was a scrapbook signed by them and several of the people I had interacted with over the past 3 months. Awwww....
It was really touching hearing what they had to say, how they had thought I looked tough the first day, but over time they thought I was a cool boss and really nice to be with. ahhheeem. lol. Seriously, it makes me feel good that at least in the short time that I led them (sort of...) they felt I did well. Even my ex-boss felt I was bright... :-p
On one side, I really felt sad for having to leave such nice colleagues behind. The people I've worked with (Production, RND, QA) have all been pleasant and gentle, seeing that I was not entirely from the Operations point of view, but they understood. The PPIC pics have all been supportive and loving, and I will keep a lot of happy memories of my stay there. Its sad I couldn't prolong the stay because I also have my own plans. But they will forever play a big part of my life.
I'm thankful for having been a part of this team.

Thanks Guys! I'll cherish the happy times we had, however short it was. :-) Good luck to all of you in your careers! See you soon, I hope!

PS. Pic background shows a replica of Optimus Price. So cool! I hope they can do a cute (and cheap) model toy of the transformers, even the car version of Optimus would be ok for me.

January 2: Malling and Haircut for Jessica

Today rather than to stay at home and say goodbye to the last day of the holidays, we decided to go to Megamall for some family time.  That is after I finished packing up the Christmas tree and all the lights and decor.   Now that the home space if free from the clutter of the Christmas season (except for some gifts that I need to give away), there is more free space for the little girl to play and run around.  But I digress, so we went to Megamall, got to see the new Toy Kingdom (which is huge), ate at the Food Court (Sizzling Plate), then brought the little girl to Cuts 4 Tots for a haircut.  Jess' hair has already grown and we decided to cut it down by 2 inches  (its actually still too long, might need another haircut in a month or so).  After the haircut the girl asked to play at Kidz Republic.  So we left her and her yaya (who is fresh from a 2day vacation btw) and went around the mall.  After getting her back we finally went to Girbaud where I was able to buy a wallet for me and for my sister who's having her birthday tomorrow.
On the pregnancy: I still have not gone to the OB, will probably do so 2nd or 3rd week of January, where hopefully the baby's heartbeat will be there already.  Meanwhile I am religiously drinking the vitamins (folic acid + prenatal vitamins) to keep healthy.  We are hoping this will be a good pregnancy now and come around August we will have the newest member of the family.

Oh btw, this is the second days of (hopefully) Project 365.  Off to a good start, I hope to finish at least with half and I will be happy.

Lunch Break

Testimony to my newly found laziness: I am now at the office for the 3rd consecutive day during lunchbreak.  I don't know if its because I'm pregnant that's why I'm lazy or its because I've no shopping money right now, but I don't really feel like walking out the door during lunch breaks as I usually would, up until last week.  Now I want to just stay in the office and hug my cute pillow during the break, get a shut-eye for 15-minutes, and then wake up still sleepy at 1pm.
Oh, and I'm really happy that so far, there are no pregnancy symptoms yet.  Last time I didn't get any, I'm hoping this time its the same, a few cravings here and there, and then some throwing up a FEW times is ok.  I did that for like less than 5 times during my first pregnancy and I'm hoping its the same thing now.
Oh, I'm glad I am back to blogging now.  Hopefully, I'll be able to write down my experiences from now on, its something I miss doing, but now I resolve to write again.  I want my second pregnancy to be just as memorable as the first one.

Still Alive

Yes, I'm still alive. I have been unusually unmotivated, uncreative and uninteresting lately. I think my cubicle job is sucking the life out of me. It's kind of like The Matrix. Life is easier when you're sedated and distracted, but occasionally you see glitches in the programming...

Potatoes, a Recipe and the Workplace

(listening to "Paragon Rag" by Scott Joplin)

This is a lot of potatoes (15 or 16 pounds). I'm baking them for work. A coworker thought it would be cool to have a baked potato bar as a change from the typical pot luck. I was nominated to do it, so people chipped in some money for the supplies. I rendered a nice pile of bacon bits, steamed some broccoli, and chopped some chives. I also have a huge tub of sour cream, tubs of whipped butter, and some cans of chili. Loaded spuds will be had by all, and I even got a Trader Joe's pepper grinder (pre-ground pepper is worthless. It is a close relative to sawdust). My oven is full of big russets right now.

My brother wanted to know more about the food in the previous post. The prosciutto-wrapped tilapia in the previous post was very simple and very good. I put a piece of prosciutto on the cutting board. Then, a tilapia filet. Then, another piece of prosciutto. I rolled it up and decided to wrap another piece of prosciutto around it. I stuck a bamboo skewer through it. I might normally bake this, but I like to use the grill during summer to keep the cooking heat outside of the house. Lindz had mentioned asparagus earlier in the day, so I got some at the store. I tossed the 'sparagus with a bit of canola oil, salt & pepper, balsamic vinegar and maple syrup (all told, just enough liquids to coat the asparagus and leave a modest puddle in the Pyrex dish). I put the asparagus on the lower level of the grill, and the tilapia above it. I have a rectangular stainless grill grate doohickie that helped prevent lost asparagus. It all didn't take very long, and I was pleased with how all the flavors went together.

And now, some contemplation about work that might get some interesting comments:

I don't miss working for Starbucks. Retail sucks ass. My current workplace does indeed resemble Office Space, but a great many others do, too. Sometimes I get philosophical about what I'm supposed to do with my life; I come up with various ways of beating myself up for not having a more exciting, lucrative or noble job than I do. I've gotten the idea in my head that it's something to with my DNA. I am a Midwestern boy, of German descent and raised as a Lutheran. As such, I think that this has made me:
1)punctual
2)hardworking
3)not a vegetarian
4)a lover of beer
5)addicted to security and predictability
6)mortally afraid of not preparing enough food for a meal
7)a diligent pantry manager, always ensuring that it would take a nuclear war and years of subsequent anarchy to make me run out of canned corn or plastic wrap
8)unable and/or unwilling to sell myself to others. I loathe job hunting more than anything in the world. More than gargling bleach. More than being rubbed vigorously all over with a cheese grater and then being dipped in hot sauce.

My loving, devoted wife and I had a lengthy, beer-lubricated conversation about this the other night at our local bar. She does not subscribe to my theory that my magical inability to make lots of money and love doing it is due to my DNA. Still, I wonder: the anthropological and socioeconomic ground from which I sprang is suited to doing okay in adversity, not thriving in prosperity. I am descended from farmers, not captains of industry. My people don't think outside the box; they ensure that it is a good, strong box with all perfect 90-degree angles. As such, my people are the people you want to be during The Great Depression.

Anyway, there are a hell of a lot of people out there who make a lot of money. In many cases, they are stupid, rude, self-entitled and lacking in integrity. Many of them are not those things. Is there really such an easy explanation? Various members and friends of my wife's extended family (none of whom are Midwestern German-Americans) are hugely wealthy, notable people. They're good people, not thieves.

I am fiercely proud of my heritage, and I could not possibly love my family more than I do. But when baked potatoes are the most exciting thing going on at the office, I have to wonder what the hell is wrong with me.

Grapefruit Bitters

I used a wine bottle to do the steeping. Lindz thought that making bitters would be a cool idea, and, by golly she was right. This bottle contains six feet of grapefruit zest (three grapefruits' worth), some grains of paradise, coriander, rosemary, ginger and Everclear.
It should be quite a potent cocktail sharpener. I added a bit of sugar syrup after straining it 24 hours later.
There is no end to the permutations of home made bitters.

Lindz and I didn't have any of the bathroom remodel professionally done. It was a family job. She and I lived with the project, but it would not have happened without her parents. They provided a huge amount of support (both moral and elbow-grease), and I probably wouldn't have had the courage to demolish an entire room of our house without Hub's "That's not a problem; we can fix that" mentality.

Instructions for Water Bladder

The rubber bite: When you receive your water bladder the rubber bite will be factory sealed. Simply remove plastic from the bite valve. There is a pre-cut slit on the tip of the rubber bite for liquids to flow through the hose to mouth. Pinch the ends of the rubber bite to break the pre-cut slit and create the hole (in pictures).

Unlocking the valve: The valve will be locked when you receive it. This feature stops the flow of when not in use. To unlock the valve pull from where the hose connects to the valve, and where the valve connects to the rubber bite. You should see the valve extend which means it is in the unlock position (in pictures).

Jessica's 2nd Birthday: Supplier Ratings

Ok, this is more than a month overdue (its 1 month and a day overdue, to be exact), and I know I owe myself to have to make this review for the sake of the readers, friends, and most of all, myself!

So, here it goes.

The idea for a birthday party for Jess' 2nd birthday came to mind because I wanted to celebrate the two years that was virtually hassle free for our family. Jessica never got really sick, never got hospitalized, never gave me reason to feel sorry for myself, and constantly made us proud becuase she is smart, cute and really really sweet. With that, I felt I wanted to reward her for the two years of love she gave to our lives. But of course, I was on a budget and wasn't ready to spend as much as I had the first year. That would be too much. I also decided it was a small celebration only at our house, so it need not be grand. But of course, I wanted to make it special and presentable.

Theme: Winnie the Pooh party.

Food: I didn't get a caterer. I inquired but felt it was too much to spend. So instead I planned to cook it all myself, which I didn't end up doing of course, because I might drop dead tired had I tried. So it was a mixture of bought and cooked stuff.
Spaghetti - I cooked (Rating: 5+++ (highest of course))
Pancit Bihon - Bought at Crisgard (new discovery). It was a really good one. A lot of people tried it and the serving was quite big, I had one whole bilao unserved after the party because there was too much food already (pasta + pancit = lot of food). Rating: 5
Barbeque - Bought from my party balloons supplier. It tasted good, as expected of course. No regrets and no bad experience. Nothing extraordinary about it though. Rating: 4
Chicken Lollipops - Prepared by me, cooked by Mom and Sisters. This one I wasn't able to do anymore. Everything was at a rush already and I am so very glad they took this in for me. WheW! Rating: 5+++
Crispy pata - I cooked. I could not afford lechon, so I figured this would work. I'm always happy about cooking this because I feel its one of my best dishes. hehe. Rating: 5+++
Dessert: Pichy-pichy by Arni-Dadings. Love it and its hassle free: Rating: 4
Dessert: Ice Cream sticks and Pinipig Sticks from Selecta: Love it also, and again, hassle free. Rating: 5.
Dessert: Gulaman Jelly from tabios Side - another addition to the menu I didn't expect, but definitely thankful for. Rating: 5
Drinks: Softdrinks and Nestea Iced Tea. No need to rate. :-)
Overall, I think the food I prepared was sufficient. And I got to use my Chafing dishes as well, so its an added point for presentation.

Decors and Tables and Chairs: I found their number on a tree just around the corner from our house, so I called them up and good thing there were no issues with them. I initially wanted to get it from a N@wie friend but it just didn't fit the budget so I decided on a cheaper alternative for now. I ordered 50 chairs and 4 round tables, and 5 square tables. Hassle free. And I also ordered the balloons from them and as a last minute order, I got their pabitin (nothing hanging yet) and barbeque. I would definitely get them again if there was another affair! Rating: 5++

Emcee/Host/Clown/Magician: The life of the party came at a really reasonable price. Which makes me happy. Got them from the Party favors supplier and I really am happy with the results. They were a typical party host. Nothing to grand or special, but at least they made the audience laugh and the kids happy. And Jess was more than willing to pose with them after the show. Rating: 5

Cake: c/o Goldilocks. Because they had a Winnie the Pooh theme. Need I say more? Rating: 4 (Met expectations)

Costume: c/o Disney costumes. Found a terribly cure Winnie the Pooh costume in SM Marikina and I just couldn't resist not buying it. So there. The happiness of seeing Jessica sooo happy wearing it was priceless though. Rating: 5++++

Giveaways: Divi Mall. DIY. Need I say more. Rating: 5+++

Overall I'd say the party was a huge success. And I thank those who helped me though it. I know Jess might not remember it too well, but seeing how happy she is reward enough for any mom.
